On Thursday night, the Seattle Mariners organization announced that the former New York Yankee third baseman has been hired as the team’s Triple-A hitting coach. This will be Brosius’ first coaching job with a Major League affiliate.
Brosius is originally from the Pacific Northwest, as he was born in Hillsboro, Oregon. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics’ in the 20th round of the 1987 amateur draft, and climbed up the team’s farm system. Late in 1990, Brosius was called up to Tacoma, an affiliate of the A’s at the time, and spent the majority of the next three seasons there.
In 1994, Brosius was in the big leagues for good. After four very good seasons in Oakland, Brosius was traded to the Yankees in a deal that involved pitcher Kenny Rogers, a trade that ultimately gave Brosius a new home for the remainder of his Major League career.
Throughout his 11 big-league seasons, Brosius posted a .257 career batting average with 141 homers and 531 RBIs in 1,146 games. He was a vital part of three World Series Championship and four American League Championship teams with the Yankees, winning the Most Valuable Player Award during the 1998 Fall Classic.
When his playing career ended after the 2001 season, Brosius quickly pursued coaching opportunities. He returned to his alma mater, Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and spent the next 13 seasons coaching at the school.
From 2007-2014, Brosius was the team’s head coach, and had tremendous success. He posted a career 237-81 record, leading the Wildcats to the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship. The 49-year-old was also selected five times as the Northwest Conference coach of the year.
With the move, Brosius will replace Cory Snyder as Tacoma’s hitting coach. Synder was fired after spending the past five seasons within the organization.
